    History

Ghost was founded in April 2013 by former Deputy Head of the WordPress UI Group John O’Nolan, who recognized the vast potential WordPress offered as a CMS, but also noted that it had grown far beyond its description of a “blogging platform.” Nolan wanted to create a simpler platform with a more intuitive design, focusing on publishing digital content without complicated tools and plugins. He set up a Kickstarter campaign to help fund its development, and within 11 hours hit his first funding goal. The support for Ghost CMS led to Nolan’s starting of the Ghost Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping Ghost open-source and community-powered while guiding its growth as a CMS platform. The first public release of Ghost occurred on October 14, 2013, and over time added more features and functionality to improve its performance and intuitiveness.

Ghost can be self-hosted on a server, but also offers cloud hosting via Ghost(Pro), with 4 tiers of plans: starter, publisher, business, and custom. Ghost(Pro) includes site management tools, analytics, automatic install, setup, updates, server maintenance, and other features that may need to be managed by a team if self-hosting. Cloud hosting through other sites like Digital Ocean and Linode is also available for Ghost sites.

Ghost(Pro) plans can be billed monthly or annually with significant monthly savings. The starter plan costs $18/month or $15/month billed annually ($216 or $180 per year, respectively); the publisher plan costs $35/month or $29/month annually ($420 or $348); the business plan costs $239/month or $199/month annually ($2,868 or $2,388); and the custom plan could costs many hundreds per month more depending on the site’s needs, user base, and scale.
